The AK-12 is the latest iteration of Mikhail Kalashnikov's legendary AK design, adopted in 2018 as Russia's primary infantry rifle under the Ratnik soldier modernization program. While retaining the AK's core operating system and legendary reliability in adverse conditions, the AK-12 adds modern features absent from earlier variants: a full-length Picatinny rail for scopes and accessories, ambidextrous controls, an improved two-stage trigger with a 2-round burst mode for accurate fire, and a reworked stock. Western analysis of captured AK-12s from Ukraine found improved manufacturing quality versus earlier AK-74M variants, though the basic operating principle remains unchanged. The AK-15 variant chambered in 7.62Γ39mm serves units that prefer heavier projectiles for penetration at closer ranges. Both variants share 95% parts commonality.
