K9 THUNDER
The K9 Thunder is South Korea's primary self-propelled howitzer and the world's most exported SPH, with sales to Australia, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, India, Norway, and Poland. Originally developed to replace aging US M109 Paladins in ROK Army service, the K9 evolved into a top-tier export success owing to its competitive price point โ roughly half the cost of PzH 2000 โ combined with performance approaching the German system. India's K9 Vajra-T (adapted for high-altitude Himalayan operations) saw action against Pakistani positions in 2016. Poland's 2022 decision to purchase 212 K9A1s โ with deliveries beginning within months โ demonstrated that South Korea could supply NATO-compatible heavy weapons rapidly while Russia-Ukraine war demand strained Western production. The K9A2 upgrade adds autonomous driving and a 2-minute response time.
