The Arjun Mk2 is India's indigenous main battle tank, incorporating 93 improvements over the Mk1 including an advanced fire control system with auto-tracker, mine plough integration, containerized ammunition storage, explosive reactive armor, and an improved transmission. The 120mm rifled gun fires KENSTAB FSAPDS ammunition developed by DRDO to penetrate modern composite armor. The Arjun features Kanchan composite armor developed at DMRL Hyderabad, which in comparative trials demonstrated protection levels comparable to the T-90S. At 68.5 tonnes, the Arjun is one of the heaviest MBTs in service, optimized for India's Thar Desert terrain. While the Indian Army initially favored the lighter Russian T-90, the Mk2 proved competitive in comparative trials and represents India's drive for defense self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
