The Type 15 (ZTQ-15) is a purpose-built light tank designed specifically for high-altitude warfare on the Tibetan Plateau and rapid deployment operations. At 33–36 tonnes, it is significantly lighter than China's 55-tonne Type 99A, enabling transport by Y-20 heavy-lift aircraft and operation in terrain where heavier tanks cannot maneuver. The 105mm rifled gun fires gun-launched ATGMs with a range of 5 km, and the tank features a pressurized crew compartment with supplemental oxygen for crews operating above 4,500 meters. Deployed along the Sino-Indian border following the 2020 Galwan Valley clash, the Type 15 is optimized for a potential conflict scenario in the Himalayas and represents a unique PLA capability with no direct Western equivalent.
