The Altay is Turkey's first indigenous main battle tank, developed to replace its aging M60T and Leopard 2A4 fleets. Based on the South Korean K2 Black Panther platform, the Altay features a domestically produced 120mm L/55 gun, ASELSAN VOLKAN-III fire control with hunter-killer capability, and the PULAT hard-kill active protection system derived from Ukrainian Zaslon technology. The T1 batch uses a South Korean powerpack, while the planned T2 series will feature the fully Turkish BATU 1,500 hp engine. Development was plagued by engine supply issues after Germany blocked MTU powerpack exports. Turkey plans to produce 250 Altay tanks, making it a cornerstone of Turkish defense industrialization goals.
