M4A1 / HK416
The M4A1/HK416 represents the dominant paradigm of Western infantry weapons β the 5.56mm NATO carbine in the AR-15/M16 platform lineage. The M4A1 (the fully-automatic US Army standard) uses the direct impingement gas system originating from Eugene Stoner's 1950s design, reliable but requiring regular cleaning due to gas fouling in the action. The HK416, developed by Heckler & Koch for US SOCOM, replaces direct impingement with a German-style short-stroke gas piston, significantly reducing carbon buildup and improving reliability in sandy, wet, or heavily-suppressed conditions. SEAL Team 6 operators used the HK416 D10RS in the Abbottabad raid that killed Osama bin Laden β its performance validated the piston design for the world's most demanding operators. France, Norway, Germany, and numerous other NATO nations have adopted the HK416 A5 as standard issue.
