The Scorpène-class is France's premier export submarine, representing a successful commercial and strategic partnership platform operated by Chile, Malaysia, India, Brazil, and Poland. Its modular design allows customers to specify the MESMA air-independent propulsion module for extended underwater endurance or maintain a simpler diesel-electric configuration. India's six Kalvari-class boats — a Scorpène derivative — are central to Indian Navy strategy in the Indian Ocean, where China's naval expansion has increased tensions. The 2016 leak of 22,000 pages of Scorpène technical documents — classified Australian submarine data published by an Indian newspaper — was one of the most significant submarine intelligence breaches in modern history, affecting operational security for all operators. Brazil's Riachuelo-class boats incorporate locally manufactured components under a technology transfer agreement.
