The AH-1Z Viper is the US Marine Corps' primary attack helicopter and the most advanced variant of the legendary HueyCobra lineage that began in Vietnam. The Z-model features a four-blade bearingless rotor system, two GE T700 engines (replacing single-engine configuration), and full glass cockpit. Its 411 km/h top speed makes it among the fastest attack helicopters in service. Crucially, the Viper is marinized — rotor blades fold for carrier and amphibious assault ship storage, making it the only US attack helicopter that routinely deploys from ships. It shares 84% parts commonality with the UH-1Y Venom utility helicopter, simplifying USMC logistics. The Viper will serve into the 2030s before replacement by the Future Long Range Assault Aircraft program.
